The British Council commissioned Bloom to showcase Granta’s selection of writing from its once-a-decade survey of Best of Young British Novelists. Designed by Royal College of Art graduates, Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay of Raw-Edges Design Studio, the display marked the beginning of a year-long partnership with the British Council in which audiences overseas had an opportunity to engage with both contemporary British design and literature.
The competition winning display, Bloom, a combination of room divider, book shelf and loom, is formed of a lightweight wooden frame and string supports that hold 80 books: 20 novels from the 2013 list and 60 novels by the writers celebrated in the previous three editions. By positioning the books at the centre of the display, Bloom allows visitors to delve into the stories contained within the pages while engaging with the books’ physical qualities and design.
Bloom is available to tour as part of the British Council and Granta’s international programme. Recent locations include venues across India, Moscow and Italy and, in April 2013, Bloom was exhibited in the Cloisters of Milan’s MOST Salone.
