The Maker Library Fixhub was a prototype for a community makerspace dedicated to fixing and repair. Commissioned by the Lodz Design Festival and British Council, and curated by From Now On, the exhibition encouraged visitors to explore the concept of fixing and how it is relevant to them. It was a call for integrating fixing in day to day life and for reflecting on attitudes to fixing in the future.
The Fixhub included:
Brave Fixed World a large gallery exploring strategies for engaging people with making and fixing
A Makerspace with a programme of activities hosted by local and international guest makers
A Library with reference and inspiration books about making and repair and a Materials Library showcasing a selection of samples from the Institute of Making and RSA Great Recovery.
The “Brave Fixed World” Gallery exhibition showcased work, graphics and films from 24 exhibitors from six countries. It was organised in five clusters: Fixing Things, Fixing Materials, Fixing Process, Fixing Systems and culminating with Fixing Attitudes.
The works on show ranged from precious book-binding conservation, to systematic approaches to reuse, adhoc fitness machine design and innovative DIY materials such as Sugru and Woolfiller. It brought together the latest digital design experiments enabling access to fixing, as well as celebrations of the broken aesthetic and the heroic graphic language of the Maker Movement manifestos.
The programme was developed with and run by the local FabLab RabbitForm and artist/librarian Arek Arkadiusz.
A comics called The Future of Fixing was specially commissioned, you can read it here: LINK
