MaXhosa by Laduma (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) was born out of an experiment that began in 2010 – to find knitwear design solutions that would pay homage to designer Laduma Ngxokolo’s Xhosa heritage, symbolism and cultural aesthetic, yet translate into contemporary wear for amakrwala (young Xhosa men being initiated into ‘manhood’). MaXhosa by Laduma draws its inspiration from traditional Xhosa-inspired patterns and beadwork and all pieces are made from merino wool and kid mohair.
