How important is it for designers and architects to experience different cultural environments? Can engaging with new design communities have an impact on practice, influence design methodologies and stir creative instinct?

These themes will be explored in an evening of presentations and discussions at the Design Museum when recent Winston Churchill Fellows in the design category will present the outcomes of their design journeys and collaborations overseas. The event celebrates the 3-year collaboration between the British Council and the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust which has resulted in over 20 international design fellowships.

Speakers

  • Architect and artist Alpa Depani, reflecting on the community-driven public spaces she encountered in New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong;
  • Assemble architect Maria Lisogorskaya, sharing insight into her research on collective building projects in USA and China;
  • and Alexander Groves, of Studio Swine, will present his experience of travelling to Brazil to research design projects which promote sustainable products from the Amazon Rainforest.

Presentations will be followed by by a discussion chaired by Sarah Mann, Director of the Architecture Design Fashion at the British Council.
