Each month one member of the ADF team selects a design object that has caught their attention. This month our Venice Fellowships Project Manager, Laura Broderick, has selected Average Spatial Compositions by Céline Condorelli.
I was visiting the Stanley Picker Gallery for a meeting relating to our Venice Fellowship Programme and had the privilege of viewing Céline Condorelli’s works, including this rather special seat.
At first, I approached the upholstered seating unit as an object for viewing – something beautiful to walk around and admire from different angles and perspectives. However on sitting upon it I felt supported and rested, and pleasantly surprised. There was another spatial unit in the exhibition, the higher backrest making it not quite as comfy as the first, but I appreciated the inclusion of both tactile and soft pieces.
With my rucksack propped next to me, I took a quiet moment in the space and thought about Céline’s exhibition, Prologue. I was unfamiliar with the artist before this show and enjoyed seeing the original flooring from P! in New York City laid out here, showing the marks accumulated over five-years of exhibition making. I also enjoyed the exposed breeze block walls framing a print and the bright abstract vinyls.
Overall I was intrigued by this black and yellow design object within the exhibition, not just a hard wooden gallery bench but something colourful and lively, considered and considerate.
Average Spatial Compositions was on show at 'Prologue', Stanley Picker Gallery, 23 November 2017 – 3 February 2018. Find out more here.
