The Big Draw in Rome: 18th May 2014

Kids, teenagers, adults – all were drawn to contribute to the large colourful picture that was taking shape at the entrance to the MAXXI museum of modern Art and Architecture in Rome. The British Council in collaboration with the MAXXI and the artist Luisa Spina brought the Campaign for Drawing’s Big Draw initiative to the event Great Britain in Rome on Sunday 18th May. The Campaign for Drawing's aim is to ‘raise the profile of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement.’ With this in mind the workshop was designed to be open to all, regardless of age, artistic prowess and profession. The forecourt of Zaha Hadid’s iconic museum was an apposite location for the workshop which looked ahead to the theme ‘It's Our World, a celebration of our environment - of urban and rural landscapes’ of this year’s Big Draw festival in October. The day-long workshop therefore encouraged the public to question, reflect on and connect with their surroundings. Visitors were engaged in the hands-on process of creating images by employing a range of simple artistic techniques. Using an array of photos, coloured acetate and pens they created collages and drawings inspired by the MAXXI’s impressive architecture, the museum’s current exhibitions such as ‘Remembering is not enough’ as well as other monuments in Rome. The Big Draw provided a flexible and effective framework through which people could transfer their impressions and ideas into a visual, collaborative artwork. A great event which gave the opportunity to everyone to work together and be creative!
