Interactive sound clouds, outsized origami sculptures and artificial landscapes are amongst the imaginative creations being developed by RIBA architects for the 2014 RIBA Windows Project in Shanghai, opening on 28 March.
Following the success of the London Regent Street Windows project and 2012 Shanghai Windows Project, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is working with the British Council and Chinese developer – China Xintiandi to develop an ambitious public design exhibition linking retailers in Shanghai that will also coincide with Shanghai Fashion Week.
The Design Your Style RIBA Windows Project @ Shanghai Xintiandi 2014 partners 10 RIBA small practices with international fashion brands located in Xintiandi - a premier fashion, art and shopping destination in Shanghai, to create eye-catching window displays of an architectural nature. The architects work closely with their retail partner to interpret and represent the brand in the form of a physical installation.
The project offers the participating retailers the chance to benefit from the unique design skills of architects and to do something experimental in a controlled 3 week display, while the architects gain the opportunity to promote their skills to a wide and diverse audience with a daily footfall of 50,000-60,000 in Shanghai's Xintiandi and Xintiandi Style shopping center.
Internationally renowned architects UN Studio are being commissioned by the developer China Xintiandi to create two gateway installations for the project. The further 10 installations will be feature in shops around the Shanghai Xintiandi site, with collaborations by:
- Delvendahl Martin Architects with Ziggy Chen
- Nex with Exception de mixmind
- Divercity with Rubis Spa
- Carl Turner Architects with Moleskine
- Markus Jatsch Partners & Ballistic Architecture Machine with Pelle Moda
- Mamou-Mani & Arup Associates with Davidson Tsui
- Laboratory for Exploratory Architecture and Design with Sushi restaurant
- naganJohnson with Tayohya
- Gundry & Ducker with PH7
- Haptic with Ein
All 12 installations will be on display in Shanghai from 28 March – 5 May 2014.
The annual London based RIBA Shop Windows also returns to Regent Street this summer for its firth year. Installations will be up for three weeks from 1-21 September 2014 and coincide with both London Fashion Week and the London Design Festival. Applications to take part are now open until Wednesday 12 March via the RIBA London website.
