The Cable Factory where the residency will take place
16 June 2013

The British Council, in partnership with the Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP), is seeking applications from practitioners to participate in a residency which will take place from 1 - 30 September in Helsinki during the Helsinki Design Week (12- 22 September).
This is the second residency that the British Council and HIAP have collaborated on, following on from the first residency during the World Design Capital programme in 2012. This new residency is for UK-based practitioners, who work at the intersections of art, design and architecture, and who have an interest in critical investigations and interventions into what constitutes the public sphere.
The residency project focuses on the shifting notions of the public and, in particular, its manifestations in the everyday urban environment. Helsinki offers an inspiring platform for this as a city going through major urban change, where redevelopment and gentrification entangle with the accelerating multiculturalism as well as increasing critical awareness of the surrounding natural environment.
