There’s a little gallery near my flat called Kemistry that I like to visit. The space is small but has a good programme of shows on graphic design and typography - recent favourites have included The Film Posters of Saul Bass, Gastrotypographicalassemblage and Typographica.
I popped in last week to see their latest exhibition Roger That! The show takes the form of a humorous short (almost miniature) story featuring 26 typographic illustration posters of the code words in the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Phonetic Spelling Alphabet.
The use of the Phonetic Spelling Alphabet code words such as Alpha for A and Bravo for B ensure clarity of communication on letters, which would otherwise be difficult to understand over radio or telephone. Their use ensures understanding not only in the aviation industry but also among the many other international organisations that use them.
The three London based studios Julia, Inventory and Eat Sleep Work/Play have each played with the words assigned to each letter from Romeo and Juliet, to Papa and Whisky for each print.
The show was first exhibited as part of UK?OK!! at the Rocket Gallery, Tokyo in August last year but has been updated for this new show which runs until Saturday 16 April.
