Kings and Queens of the Future

Guaranty Trust Bank Lagos Fashion and Design Week presents ‘Kings and Queens of The Future’, a showcase that combines cultural heritage with a re-interpretation of fashion, bridging the gap between the past, present and future. Curator Crystal Deroche gives a creative insight into the future of Nigerian fashion via an exploration of Nigeria’s rich and historical cultural heritage through the perspective of Nigeria’s brightest stars. Nigeria has more than 250 ethnic groups, with varying languages and customs, creating a country of rich ethnic diversity. The concept behind the exhibition 'Kings & Queens of Tomorrow' is to travel around Nigeria, a diverse country. The exhibition explores Nigerea's fashion history and custodians of cultural heritage with the view to mirror and celebrate the country’s greatness through a reinterpretation of its garments. To take you through this journey, we focused on five of these kingdoms - Benin, Ife, Oyo, Calabar, Kano – to tell Nigeria’s story in a captivating and creative way.
