ARCHITECTURAL TOUR, VENICE FELLOWSHIPS 2016 INDUCTION DAY

26 April 2016
by Debbie Leane

The Venice Fellowships programme 2016 kicked-off last week with our 48 Fellows attending an induction day at The Cass. The aim of the day is to prepare Fellows for their joint Steward-Research roles at the Venice Architecture Biennale through practical invigilation training, curatorial talks, visits and research workshops, as well as being a chance for Fellows to get to know one another.

The Fellowships programme is a broad network of UK-based students, graduates and apprentices, and partner universities, British Pavilion Commissioner Vicky Richardson welcomed the new Fellows to network. Along with the British Pavilion team we were also joined by new ADF Director Sarah Mann.

Fellows' first taste of their roles in the British Pavilion came from talks by the Head Steward Francesco Raccanelli and 2014 Fellow Eeva Sarlin who passed on their stewarding experiences from the inaugural Venice Fellowships Programme in 2014. Eeva gave an analogue slideshow of photographs and drawings from her trip, and Francesco told Fellows to expect the unexpected! The group then took to the streets visiting Electronic Superhighway at the Whitechapel Gallery and Channa Horwitz at Raven Row thinking about how leading galleries function.

Two of the Home Economics curators, Jack Self and Finn Williams, presented to the Fellows providing an exclusive insight into the design of the exhibition itself, leading on to information and advice on the research side of the Fellowships from the British Pavilion team.

A curated tour around Whitechapel delved deeper into the topic of temporal occupation which will be addressed by the Home Economics exhibition, locations visited were linked to different periods of time. For Hours, a visit to The Curve luxury student accommodation, considering communal and private spaces, and observed how one can walk around a fully occupied building and not bump into any other people. Months took us to Tower House: Rowton Lodger Housing, a 19th century lodging for low-paid workmen which questioned what the minimum requirements are in terms of space and facilities to make a person feel at ‘home’. For Decades we entered artist Dennis Severs’ House, a gallery-house displayed as home to a fictional family of silk weavers from the early 18th to early 20th centuries, the feeling of a lived-in home was created not just from the interior but through sound and smell. Years were considered by observing the single remaining façade of the Old Fruit and Wool Exchange in Old Spitalfields Market. Finally, we focused on Days while visiting co-working space WeWork in Aldgate Tower as a temporary personal space. Despite the rain, the tour got everyone thinking about contemporary ways of living and working, and opened discussion on how we inhabit space.

We would like to thank The Cass, London Metropolitan University for hosting the induction day, and Whitechapel GalleryRaven Row, Denis Severs' HouseWeWork and The Curve for supporting the induction day programme.
