Sarah Mann joined us as the Director of Architecture Design Fashion this month. We’re thrilled to welcome her and what better way to introduce her than through our three disciplines.

A is for Architecture:
Recently during my work at the National Trust I was lucky enough to work at 2 Willow Road, the residence of architect Erno Goldfinger and his wife Ursula. It’s a very special example of early modernist housing and the interiors remain largely as they were when it was given to the Trust 20 years ago. There are so many details and designs that I admire, from the concrete staircase and core to the flexible, open plan spaces he made for working and entertaining. But it’s the small details that are really interesting, such as his early furniture prototypes using found industrial materials and the wooden screen, a surrealist display device used by the family to display their collections of paintings and objects. It’s a very inspiring place and easy to see how it continues to influence and inspire new generations of architects and designers.

D is for Design:
I have a real passion for graphic arts. I was lucky enough to be the co-curator of Pick me Up Graphic Arts Festival at Somerset House for its first four years. It’s a really energetic scene and we wanted to capture that in the fair so there are always lots of workshops and events that really encourage the visitor to get involved with the creative process of making and also to meet the people behind the work. It always feels very fresh and vibrant and the gallery is really alive with activity. It’s on now at Somerset House and this year includes a retrospective of British typographic master Alan Kitching.

F is for Fashion:
I am very excited to see a new wave of British menswear designers emerging; it’s a really interesting and vibrant area of growth for British fashion. I am a particular fan of London duo Agi and Sam. You can really see the influence of everyday London life in the shapes and patterns in their work. They have named everything “from daily tube journeys to local kebab shops” as sources of inspiration.
