Formed in 2011, 'What Design Can Do' is series of international events celebrating the power of design in tackling the critical challenges facing society today. This year the international event comes to the biggest city in Brazil, São Paulo, on December 7-8, 2015 where there will be a series of notable speakers, masterclasses and workshops. This year they will be looking into topics such as: Urban Issues, Cultural Consciousness and Nature.

São Paulo in particular has a thriving and extensive cultural scene that fascinates outsiders. Nonetheless, it is impossible to ignore the huge problems facing a city and country undergoing rapid change in the social, cultural and economic domains.

The two-day program is divided into different sections, each focussing on a specific theme. Speakers in these sections will be from all kinds of backgrounds and working in different disciplines as they are firm believers in cross breeding.

This year's line up includes international design writer Rick Poynor, Brazilian designer and TV-host Marcelo Rosenbaum and the incredible and visionary designer Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg: what more reasons do you need to buy your tickets for What Design Can Do São Paulo now?

Rick Poynor

Design critic, lecturer and curator Rick Poynor is known for his sharp understanding and critical survey of the design profession. He was the founding editor of graphic design review Eye and co-founded the acclaimed Design Observer website. At WDCD São Paulo you’ll get the opportunity to hear his vision on design for a better world.

Marcelo Rosenbaum

Interior and product designer Marcelo Rosenbaum likes to show his fellow Brazilians – and the rest of the world – how references to personal memories and cultural roots can boost their self-esteem. The project A Gente Transforma is a good example. Come to meet the host of TV-show Lar Doce Lar in person.

Alexander Daisy Ginsberg

‘As a designer and artist, I’m interested in whether biology can ever truly be designed, and if it can, using design to ask what we should – or shouldn’t – be designing with it,’ says Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, a London-based designer, artist and writer who explores emerging technologies. In her project Designing for the Sixth Extinction she envisions the design of new species.'
