As part of the International Fashion Showcase the British Council hosts an exhibition from a participating county. Last year an African showcase presented emerging designers from Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Botswana. This year is the turn of South America. Argentina will be presenting their exhibition Journey Through the Landscape betweeen 11 February - 8 March.

The exhibiton will present nine emerging designers from five regions of Argentina; Salta and Formosa in the north, Corrientes and Buenos Aires in the east, and Córdoba in central Argentina. The exhibition will guide visitors through these new fashion landscapes showing how the designers draw inspiration from their native scenery and natural materials. Some work with designs and patterns reminiscent of ancient cultures. Many of them use regional indigenous materials reinvented for contemporary wear: leather, hand loomed wool alpaca, chagear fibres, barracan, cotton and antique aquayos. Others take their inspiration from urban contrasts and rhythms. This showcase seeks to celebrate the versatility and value of traditional materials and techniques through the creativity and innovation of nine emerging designers.

Ultimately, the cultures that inspire Argentina’s designers are as varied as the environments in which the countries flora and fauna develops. Argentina is a vast country where a plethora of landscapes coexist: from the pampas and tropical rainforests to the stunning waterfalls, its extensive plains, its coastlines and rivers and the high Andeś peaks. By contrast, Buenos Aires, its great capital and centre of migratory flow, is a thriving cosmopolitan city, influenced by international trends and movements.

Argentina has a unique identity, diverse in nature and drawn from many influences - characteristics that you will see reflected in the work shown in this exhibition. This work echoes the awesome breadth of the landscape’s natural beauty as well as heralding a new generation of fashion talent. .
